COMMENTS: Arrived JSPC Apr 12, 1965, from Clark AB, departed Apr 12, 1971
for Nakhon Phanom, Thailand via schools in CONUS. Worked in JSPC-37, JSPC-35
and JSPC's Watch Office under Earl Bateman (GS-15). Arrived as an E-3 20330
and left as an E-5 20270.
Was very briefly in charge of AF's C flight just
prior to leaving. Knew some of the folks at CRS-Sobe and some of the
computer people - and retired Navy Chief Blankenship, a super guy who was
then a GS-11 working in J-2. Retired from the AF as an E-7 on Nov 30,
1983.
COMMENTS: Ben, Was stationed old Sobe Camp from June '57 to June '59 as a
morse code radio interceptor. They renamed Sobe Camp to Torii Station just before I left. Have a friend here in
Sheboygan whom I met at Fort Devens in Mass. during school names Ken Greger.
Mine is Gerald Mueller, worked in the operations building under Sgt. West
and then Sgt. Thompson. You know about the ASA
Okinawa reunions? Later

COMMENTS: Hi, Looks like we were both on "The Keystone Of The Pacific" at
about the same time. I was there from September of 59 until Feb. of 61. I
was in the Army at Camp Sukiran in the 30th Artillery Brigade Air Defense
(Nike Hercules). It was a nice place to pull my duty. Don

COMMENTS: Started off in JSPC's Commcenter and was a cryptographer for Chief
JSPC. Left and went next door to CRS Okinawa. CT Don Gaylord came in from
Meade and was the Chief's Cryptographer. Worked for a chief Neuman while at
JSPC. Hung with Grant Fleming, Paul Foster, Dave Long, Stu Stout, Dave
Martin, Ken "Header" Johnson, Hank Witmer, Pitman & many others. What a
great tour.
COMMENTS:
I was assigned to the 111th Signal Service Company, which thru several name
changes, became the present Torii Station. The unit was located on the south
edge of a deep ravine near the town of Futenma. The remnants of this station
apparently are the billets where Ben lived in 1961. An old buddy who was
there at that time has a website with photos and stories of some of our
"misdeeds". See it at: http://www.geocities.com/debeasley_99/ASA/index.html Regards
to all fellow escapees from The Rock. Lew

COMMENTS: My wife Dixie and myself were at Naha. We had a pretty fair
softball team and I was fortunate enough to be one of about 4 players from
the Naha team to play on the interservice team in 64 or 65. I found one team
picture which has my best friend, now deceased, Larry Nytz and myself listed
as Scheemer or something like that. I had a lot of fun playing on the team
that summer.

I was on "the rock" from July'69 to Dec '70 with the
USAFSS. Our daughter was born at Camp Kue Army Hospital
in December of 1969. Left the USAF in 1972 as an E5
discharged at Ft. Meade, MD. I served with lots of good
people which led me to your site through a search
engine. Just wanted to see if I recognized any of the
entries. Thanks for the opportunity.

That the two retaurants across the street from Torii
were off limits. Made great friends with the owners.
Would go into the pawn shop, where I learned to play
go. Suko and I would go up to Moon Beach about once
a week in his red toyota. Out the back door to the
restaurants where I learned to cook stir fry.
COMMENTS: Seemed to spend a lot of time in off limits
places. Once I got the pigeon version of Japanese down. Who else has a key
to the "Club 007"? I took the Com Officer one evening. He was scared to
death being there. How do I explain to the Captain that I was cought in an
this place. One you need a key and the MP's don't have one. 2nd the owner
is a Marine Major. Watching tyfoon weather reports to get off base so that
we would be locked off. Typhoon parties at various homes. Pat Fleming was a
great host.
Memories of a fried rice breakfast at the club after getting back off
break and only a chit book for money. Chief Cox moving my room down by the
door at the end of the barracks to make it easier to have visitors. A room
mate who was a dirt biker and would leave mud caked boots and jeans standing
in the hall for the house boy to clean (the jeans were so stiff with mud they
stood!) Jere Robinson showing me the little upstairs bar that had a massive
tape library and a complete Hank Williams RCA 78 library in a paper album.
No girls just 6 or 8 stools and great music. The mamasan's sister operated
the "Club 007." Hours spent wandering the back alleyways of the market. Some
of the best food. Many aftenoon hours of playing GO with old old men. The
"secret" doors of the afterhours clubs. One had a stairway that went out
through a small Buddist temple. Gee, Okinawa was dull.

You guys upstairs in JSPC, were like guests. I had just come back into
the Navy, after my first hitch, so I didn't have a clearance when the first
group came to start up JSPC, so I drove the bus from Futenma to Torii
Station, and shuttled the start up crew back and forth. Lot of memories of
Okinawa. My second daughter Lana was born at Camp Kue.

Thanks to John Farrall, Ed Marciniak, Ben Ciriacks, Joe Glockner and many
other contributors, the memories of NSGA & JSPC Okinawa will live on. Little
did any of us know back in the early 60's that we'd all be connected via the
worldwide internet and would still be reliving our experiences on that far
away island. Recent events have awakened many memories and we can all be
proud (mostly, anyway) of the roles we played together so many years ago.
COMMENTS: Ben, Excellent!! I received Ed's and your
email about this Guestbook/website. I thank you for linking my website from
yours! Okinawa was my "first" duty station out of A-school and was
definitely a learning experience! I started at Hanza with Ed Marciniak and
Rusty Martin; but, a few months later was sent down to JSPC on Torii
Station. I stayed there at JSPC the rest of the time while on Okinawa. I
has been so good to find so many good friends from so LONG ago! Thanks again
Ben for your website! Joe
